Protection galleries and rock sheds have proven their worth as rockfall mitigation structures. However, existing rockfall protection galleries are increasingly acting in regions where the potential hazards exceed their design capacity. TECCO® cylinder modules enhance their protection capacity while dramatically reducing the static load on the system. Components
Five straightforward system components comprise the damping modules:
TECCO® cylinder module
High-tensile TECCO® steel wire mesh forms cylindrical modules supported by steel rings to the top and bottom. It restricts lateral displacement of cushioning material, thus enhancing the dissipation of energy through the modular system.
Geo-textile lining
A geo-textile is used to prevent penetration of the TECCO® cylinder modules with the cushioning fill material.
Cellular glass fill
Cellular glass fill (MISAPOR®) is used as the cushioning material. With a density of only 250 kg/m3, it is six to eight times lighter than gravel.
TECCO® mesh dividers
TECCO® mesh divides each module. This aids the energy dispersion through the system.
Boundary rope
A 8mm boundary rope with shackle attachments binds the seven cylinder modules as one unit.
Dimensioning
Rigorous laboratory and field testing of Geobrugg damping modules in collaboration with Swiss Federal Institute WSL and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich have proven the excellent energy absorption capacity of this well thought-out system.
Benefits
Geobrugg’s damping modules for rockfall protection galleries are a clear choice for added safety and protection against rockfall. They provide a solution with the most effective energy absorption capacity that is easily installable and cost effective, enhancing protection provision of both current rockfall protection galleries and their future design.
